Instructor Development Programs (IDP)
Celebrating 20 Years of Online
Instructor Development Programs (IDP)
The Canadian College of Educators is proud to celebrate 20 years of online IDP and having nearly 2,000 career college instructor graduates across Canada having gone through the program with great success.
History of our Instructor Development Programs:
Our IDP was first developed in 2004 as a single online course, long before online courses were popular or even acceptable. In 2005 the program was expanded as a series of three courses and then further expanded in 2006 to two levels (IDP Foundations and IDP Advanced) to include a practicum. Of course, no successful or reputable teacher training program can be without a practicum. The government of BC then accredited the program for instructors in regulated career colleges. The program soon became known in Ontario and other provinces, although never mandated as required but aspirational. In 2008 the National Association of Career Colleges made an exclusive agreement with Canadian College of Educators to borrow the program and have the college deliver it until 2015 and then again from 2020 to 2024. Now, 20 years later the IDP Foundations and IDP Advanced have become the most successful and widely spread online instructor development programs for career college educators across Canada.
About the Instructor Development Programs:
There are two online IDP certificate program options – IDP Foundations and IDP Advanced.
Each program is 100 credit hours and comprised of 3 courses. All courses are fully online, have any time start dates and allow participants the flexibility to create their own study schedule. In order to take the IDP Advanced program, participants must first complete the Foundations program. Participants have up to 6 months to complete each 100-hour program.
IDP Foundations Certificate:
IDP 101 – Teaching in Career Colleges (20 hours)
IDP 102 – Designing Instruction for Adult Education (40 hours)
IDP 103 – Assessment and Evaluation (40 hours)
IDP Advanced Certificate:

*Participants living in remote areas, teaching online, or unable to complete an in-person practicum may substitute the IDP 106 course for an equivalent IDP online 20-hour practicum course “Teaching and Developing an Online Course.”

What’s NEW with our IDP?
As a career college that specializes and is solely dedicated to educator training and development, our team of curriculum developers and faculty work year-round as a top priority to always be one step ahead in the adult education field and regularly update courses with topics of emergent education trends.
Our first course in IDP Foundations has always focussed on professional conduct but now also includes new units of emerging education topics in the current Canadian educational landscape such as anti-racism, indigenous awareness, LGBTQ2S+, and the impact of multiculturalism.
As online education continues to grow and be widely accepted post pandemic, we too continue to develop and focus on new content in both our Foundations and IDP Advanced programs to include synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid and mobile learning and teaching environments as well as the traditional classroom.
In our IDP Advanced program you will learn about the newest and fastest growing trend in education: Artificial Intelligence (AI)! From creating a personalized learning path, to content creation, to enhanced collaboration tools and assistive technologies, you will be amazed at what AI can do for you and your students.
Credit Transfers for Graduates of Instructor Development Programs:
