International Languages Instructor (ILI) Certificate & Diploma Programs
Online Professional Development Programs for International Languages Instructors
The International Languages Instructor (ILI) Certificate and Diploma is a specialized professional development program designed for educators who teach heritage and international languages within school boards. These programs support multiculturalism by enabling children and youth to maintain and develop their home or ancestral languages. Unlike ESL programs, which focus on English language acquisition, International Language programs focus on teaching languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Ukrainian, Italian, Portuguese, Punjabi, and others within K–12 settings.
The ILI program provides a universal pedagogical framework that can be applied to the teaching of any international language. Drawing from established research in second language acquisition and second language acquisition–informed methodologies, the program equips instructors with evidence-based strategies that transfer across languages and grade levels. Participants learn how to design engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction for K–8 and secondary learners, manage multilingual classrooms, assess language proficiency, integrate culture meaningfully, and uphold professional standards within school board environments.
International Languages Instructor Certificate Program:
The 100-hour online International Languages Instructor Certificate program is comprised of Sessions 1 and 2 and ten asynchronous course modules. It may be completed as a stand-alone Certificate program or as the required first stage of the Diploma pathway.
International Languages Instructor Diploma Program:
The International Languages Instructor Diploma pathway comprises 200 hours, four sequential sessions, and 20 asynchronous course modules. Participants must successfully complete the Certificate program in Sessions 1 and 2 before proceeding to the Diploma-level studies in Sessions 3 and 4.
About the Sessions
All sessions have any-time start dates. Participants may enrol in one session at a time for occasional study, two sessions concurrently for part-time studies, or all four sessions concurrently for full-time studies.
About the Online Course Modules
All modules involve approximately 10 hours of self-directed online study and allow participants to determine their own pace and study schedule. Course modules have any-time start dates and remain accessible throughout the participant’s enrolment period.
Participants have up to six months to complete each session. The complete program may be finished in less than six months when participants enrol in and complete more than one session concurrently.
Each module includes instructional content, applied learning activities, journaling or reflection prompts, and a final test. Participants are permitted more than one attempt at module tests to achieve a passing grade or improve their grade.
