Certificate in Teaching English for Academic Purposes

This 25-hour online course is designed for teachers seeking an additional qualification for teaching
English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The course focuses on enhancing proficiency in teaching the four
academic language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Other topics in the course are note-
taking, presentation skills, new technologies, evaluation, plagiarism, academic vocabulary,
academic study skills, grammar for academic writing and stress management. The course provides
training in effective lesson planning strategies tailored for EAP, ensuring that educators can design and
implement lessons that meet the specific needs of students preparing for higher education. 

• Identify the purpose of EAP and recognize the challenges associated with teaching it, including
  cultural differences, stereotyping, and bias in classroom interactions.
• Implement strategies for managing stress and effective time management to enable students to
  successfully navigate the demands of academia.
• Analyze the three stages of reading (pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading) to develop a
  structured approach for teaching EAP reading skills to students.
• Examine academic vocabulary in detail to enhance students’ language proficiency in academic contexts.
• Evaluate the structure and organization of academic essays and demonstrate proficiency in
  citation and referencing styles.
• Review and apply specific grammar topics relevant to the academic setting to enhance students’
  writing skills in EAP.
• Develop effective listening skills in academic settings, enabling participants to comprehend and
  engage with complex subject matter.
• Improve speaking skills for effective communication in academic contexts, enabling participants
  to articulate ideas and opinions confidently.
• Enhance students’ note-taking abilities through the application of proven techniques, ensuring
  comprehensive understanding and retention of lecture content.
• Develop lesson plans for EAP classes, incorporating evaluation methods, assignments, and
  homework assignments.
• Identify and address issues related to plagiarism

How the course works:
Register here using the secure on-line registration form below. Once your registration has been confirmed by the College you will be sent a username and password by email to begin the course. You may work at your own pace from any computer with an Internet connection. The course is divided into topics and sections. There are four tests in this course. If at first, you do not succeed on any of the four tests you can try again until you pass and feel confident to go on to the next section.
Upon completion of a course, the certificate and a transcript will be emailed. A hard copy of the certificate mailed to you can be purchased for $25.
