Certificate in Practicum Mentorship (PM)
Course Description
This 25-hour course focuses on the unique challenges and opportunities of practicum mentorship, ensuring that mentors can provide the support, guidance, and feedback necessary for mentees to succeed in real-world learning and teaching environments. It equips mentor educators with the essential skills and knowledge required to mentor new teachers during their practicum experiences.
The course consists of four units:
Unit 1: Introduction to Practicum Mentorship
This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the mentor-mentee relationship, highlighting its definition, importance, and dynamics. It discusses ethical considerations essential for maintaining integrity and trust in the mentorship process and differentiates between coaching and mentoring to clarify their distinct roles and benefits.
Unit 2: Establishing and Maintaining the Mentorship Relationship
This unit covers the development of strong communication and interpersonal skills, emphasizing the importance of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in fostering a supportive and respectful practicum mentor-mentee relationship.
Unit 3: Observation
The unit guides practicum mentor teachers through the process of conducting effective classroom observations, focusing on key elements to monitor and assess. It covers post-observation activities, including providing detailed feedback and engaging in reflective discussions to enhance teaching practices to support novice and pre-service teachers.
Unit 4: Teaching Practicum
This unit explores effective strategies the practicum mentor teacher can use to supervise teaching practice, ensuring constructive guidance and support. The unit also covers post-teaching activities, emphasizing reflective practices and feedback mechanisms to enhance teaching effectiveness and foster continuous improvement.
Evaluation
In the program there are 4 online quizzes (required) and many journaling opportunities and reflections that are optional for additional training and critical thinking on topics of special interest. You must receive at least 70% on all quizzes to pass the course and can have unlimited attempts at the quizzes.
Length of the Online Program
You will have six months from the time you register to complete the program. You can finish it in weeks, months, however you wish to pace yourself. It is entirely up to you!
Certificate and Transcript
When you finish the program, you will be immediately issued a transcript of completion and your Certificate in Practicum Mentorship from the Canadian College of Educators by email. A hard copy of the certificate to be mailed to you can be purchased for $25.
Registration
Once you register (below) you will be provided with an ID and a password, which is unique only to you, by email once your registration has been confirmed. You will then be able to log into the program. At that time, you will also be assigned an instructor that you may contact should you have any questions while logging in or completing the program.
